The short story of a short documentary: ” One Day, They will run the world”

Une francophone à Washington

People have pretty much always said i was a feminist. As far as i can remember, i have always been particularly drawn to women’s issues probably because i could relate more.

When I was interning in DC , Rosemary Reed, my boss was asked to do a speech about women and leadership at a university. I researched the topic and found some statistics, reports and quotes. But, i wasn’t fully prepared to what the research said. Most of the literature emphasized on the problems women still faced in the workplace. Moreover, at the same time, I was attending panels at the Washington Center, with women telling us they hid their pregnancies fearing they would get fired.

I was shocked and outraged and that’s how it all started.

The idea first grew in my mind. The hardest part was definitely to start writing the script, figure out the axis and main…

Only boys know about soccer/ Seuls les garcons sont bons au soccer

12 May

Obviously! People used to say that boys played and knew about soccer when girls just watched, not understanding anything.

It’s not completely changed apparently. On Virgin Radio, yesterday, to win a ticket for the Galaxy vs Impact soccer game, girls had to answer questions about Victoria Beckham’s closet whereas boys had questions about David Beckham’s soccer performances.

————————————————————————————

Solar energy applied in Africa/ L’énergie solaire appliquée en Afrique

28 Nov

As globalization is spreading even faster,  competition is getting tougher between countries. Because of the rapid development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the digital divide is growing and thus some people are left behind. Young people in rural areas in Africa barely have electricity or education so the question of the Internet is not discussed.

However, Samsung has developed an initiative to address all of those issues and even more.As a part of its social innovation, Samsung has developed some mobile solar powered schools.  For the past few years, people have started using containers as apartments but the concept is now taken to the next level. Up to 21 students can use the classroom during the day. The container comprises laptops, ventilation system, 3G wireless routers, electronic blackboard and a mini fridge. This sounds like a perfect environment for learning! After the school day, adults can organize meetings and use the laptops to have access to the Internet.

All of this is possible thanks to solar panel installed on the roof of the school that can generate nine hours of electricity per day.

If this pilot school works, Samsung is planning to expand to Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan to give 2.5 million students access to education and Internet. It is not the only company who wants to make a lasting impact in Africa. Apple has also entered a joint venture with the Zimbabwean government to provide rural schools with solar powered Ipads to reduce the digital divide.

If these initiatives really work it is likely that it will really make a difference in the coming years. Education is the stepping stone for a healthy and vibrant society. Both the short and long term prospects of these initiatives are encouraging. The best is yet to come!

Is transnational Apple’s Siri transgender? / La création Siri de la transnationale Apple serait-elle transgenre?

21 Oct

Steve Jobs’ death sparked much attention in the media and funnily enough, around the same time Apple launched its new Iphone 4S. With the new phone came another innovation: Siri, a talking woman who is basically the cellphone’s  “brain”. She is actually comparable to a GPS ‘s female voice who tells you where to go and what to do. So Siri is another woman who is entering our lives to guide and help us. But have you ever wondered why so many computer voices where female?

Did you know that scientific studies have shown people are more pleased by a female voice? For some biological reason, people seem to like female voices more.

There is also a historical explanation. Ever since World War II, women voices have been used in airplane cockpits but also as telephone operators.

Thus, for marketing benefits, female voice is a default setting in most cases. However, in Germany, BMW’s drivers complained saying they refused taking directions from a woman. In France and Britain, the Iphone 4S’s Siri is actually a man. Stephen Ebbett, of gadget insurer Protectyourbubble.com says British would be more receptive to an authoritative male voice.Different cultures and stereotypes have a major influence on the voice gender.

Finding the right voice can actually be a nightmare and requires Hollywood-like castings!

Except from the question of the voice, Siri has been the target of Youtube videos ( definitely worth watching) and Japanese jokes. After the laughable Ipad, Japanese have mocked Siri’s name close from shiri, a term for buttocks.

However, despite some small glitches, Siri, male or female, is an exciting innovation that will foster development in the field of artificial intelligence. Maybe in a few years, our fridges will be monitored by Siri’s brother or sister!

What makes a woman an ideal wife/partner?

Think about it for a while and get ready for the surprising answer.

According to the Pew Research Center, 93% of Millennial men (age 18 to 29) look for ” a good mother”. Yes, a good mother, you read it! Yes, you’re right, we are in 2011 and this survey was made in April this same exact year. Moreover, the woman has to be caring and compassionate (for 88%). The third quality most appreciated is the fact a woman has the will to put her family before anything else (74%).

Women also admitted to wanting ” a good father” (91%), a compassionate and caring man who puts his family first. At least, everyone agrees on the most important quality.

This survey reveals a lot about our behaviours and beliefs. I would have personally thought qualities like humour and intelligence would be more important but apparently not. A “well-educated” partner is considered as important only by 52% of men and 38% of women.

For one woman in three, an ideal partner has to provide a good income whereas the same belief is shared by only approximately one man in ten. But i think if we compared the survey to some about Gen Xers or Boomers, it would still show a huge progress.

When it comes to household chores, it is agreeable to see that the same amount of women and men think it a valuable quality. But, once again, is that really what we look for when marrying someone or deciding to spend your life with someone?

When it comes to love, this survey seems to imply to it’s probably better for everyone ( men and women) to just practice changing diapers than to waste time studying.

Weight Watchers could have saved her / Weight Watchers aurait pu la sauver

21 Apr

Summer is coming and suddenly, going on a diet and doing sport become much more important than during the cold months of winter. Tabloids and gossip websites flood us with pictures of celebrities at the beach and interviews that reveal ” the diet that worked for them”. The preoccupation with  beauty and health  is somehow a modern anxiety that started not too long ago in our society dying for perfection and eternal life. Yet, some of our ancestors could have used a little advice a couple of milleniums ago.

Ahmose Meryet Amon, for instance, maybe could have been saved by Weight Watchers. Too bad for her, she lived in Ancient Egypt where people seemed to have no clue about the benefits of healthy diets and exercise.

Her mummy recently underwent a CT scan and archaeologists found some very interesting news. The princess who died in her forties showed clogged arteries notably the ones supplying brain and heart in blood. ” The child of the moon, beloved Amun” was probably eating food with too many calories and being too sedentary.

“If the princess was in a time machine and I was to see her now, I would tell her to lay off the fat, take plenty of exercise, then schedule her for heart surgery,” said Gregory Thomas, professor of cardiology.

I think it is incredible archaeologist can know so much about someone examining his bones, arteries and body in general. Moreover, they corroborate their discoveries with other documents like texts and papyrus in the case of Ancient Egypt.

Anyways, if you don’t want to end up mummified at 40 years old like Ahmose Meryet Amon, you know what to do!
